Wall Mount Garage Door Opener in Gateway, TN

Jackshaft openers mounted beside the torsion shaft for townhome and low-ceiling garages in the Gateway district of Murfreesboro, quiet enough for a bedroom above the garage.

Wall mounted jackshaft opener bolted beside a garage door torsion shaft

Gateway is the district 2.1 to 3.5 miles northwest of the Rutherford County courthouse, west of I-24 at exit 78B along Medical Center Parkway. It is the newest part of Murfreesboro by a wide margin: The Avenue Murfreesboro, 811,000 square feet of retail, opened on October 17, 2007, and Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, 418 beds at 1700 Medical Center Parkway, opened on October 2, 2010. Housing here is mostly multifamily and townhome product rather than detached houses, which changes what a garage needs. Wall mount garage door opener in Gateway, TN is the right search for a townhome garage: a single door, a low ceiling, often a room above it, and no space on the ceiling for a rail and motor head.

Murfreesboro Premier Garage Door covers Gateway Monday to Friday 7 am to 7 pm and Saturday 8 am to 5 pm, with after-hours messages called back the same or next working day. A jackshaft unit mounted on the wall beside the spring frees the ceiling, runs quieter than a chain drive and suits exactly the kind of garage this district is built with.

Why Gateway Garages Suit a Wall Mount Opener

The district is built differently from the subdivisions around it, and the opener should match the building.

Townhome garages with single doors and little headroom

The standard single garage door sizes are 8 by 7 and 9 by 7 feet, and a townhome garage is built around one door of that size rather than a 16 foot double. Standard residential track needs 12 inches of headroom for a 12 inch radius or 14.25 inches for a 15 inch radius, and low-headroom track brings that down to about 9 inches for a front-mount setup and 4.5 inches for a rear-mount one. When the ceiling is that close to the top of the door, a conventional opener rail and motor head either will not fit or hangs in the way of the car roof and the storage racks. A wall mount jackshaft opener mounts beside the torsion shaft at the end of the door and turns the shaft directly, so nothing hangs from the ceiling at all. It is the most expensive of the four drive types and the only one that solves a headroom problem rather than working around it.

A bedroom or living room above the garage

Stacked townhome layouts put habitable rooms directly over the garage, and a chain-drive opener on a ceiling rail transmits its noise and vibration straight up through the framing. For a garage with a room above it a jackshaft unit removes the rail that carries the vibration, and the only sound left is the door itself on its rollers. If the rollers are steel with open bearings that is still a noise, so a wall mount install here is often paired with sealed nylon rollers to finish the job.

Heat in uninsulated garages and electronics on the wall

The hot season runs 3.8 months from May 26 to September 19 with a July average high of 89 F, and July brings 25.2 muggy or worse days. A townhome garage with a flat roof or a bedroom floor above it holds that heat, and opener electronics mounted at the ceiling sit in the hottest air in the room. A wall mount unit sits lower, beside the door, and its control board gets a little relief from that. Every opener here, whatever the drive, still needs its photo eyes mounted no higher than 6 inches above the floor and tested monthly.

What the City of Murfreesboro Requires for an Opener Install in Gateway

Gateway is inside the Murfreesboro city limits, so the City office applies, not the county. Checked October 2026; these change.

City Building and Codes, 111 West Vine Street

Permits and inspections for Gateway addresses run through the City of Murfreesboro Building and Codes Department at 111 West Vine Street, open Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The City adopted the 2018 International Residential Code and the 2017 National Electrical Code under Ordinance 18-O-71, effective February 1, 2019, and the same ordinance sets the design wind speed at 115 mph. The City permit page lists permits as required for alterations, renovations and additions to single-family dwellings, zero lot lines and duplexes, with processing of up to two weeks, and its local exemption list does not name garage doors. Swapping an opener on the existing outlet is ordinary repair work. Enlarging the opening or adding a circuit is an alteration, and we confirm with Building and Codes before that kind of work on a Gateway townhome.

A new outlet for a wall mount unit is an electrical permit

A jackshaft opener mounts at the side of the door, not at the ceiling where the existing outlet usually is. If the garage has no outlet within reach of the mounting position, a new dedicated outlet is electrical work under the 2017 NEC. The City fee schedule, 26-R-10, effective June 1, 2026, prices a residential electrical permit for remodels at $100 for a 0 to 200 amp service, with the required inspection and first re-inspection included. We arrange a licensed electrician for the outlet and the permit; we do not run the circuit ourselves. Where an outlet is already in reach, the opener plugs in and no electrical permit is involved.

Licensing thresholds and the HOA check

Rutherford is one of nine Tennessee counties where a state Home Improvement licence is required for residential projects from $3,000 to $24,999. A wall mount opener install on its own sits below that line. Combined with a new door it can cross it, and a project of $25,000 or more needs a full contractor licence. Check any contractor at verify.tn.gov, the state public search. Townhome communities like those in Gateway are often governed by an owners association with architectural rules, and we ask you to check your association's guidelines before a door replacement, since a new door is a visible change where an opener is not. Every opener we install meets 16 CFR Part 1211 and is tested for the 2 second contact reversal and the photo eye reversal before we leave.

Where We Work in the Gateway District

Gateway runs along Medical Center Parkway from the I-24 interchange at exit 78B west toward the battlefield. The Avenue Murfreesboro and the Embassy Suites are the retail and hotel end of it; Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital at 1700 Medical Center Parkway anchors the medical end; Gateway Island park and The Fountains at Gateway sit between them. The residential product is tucked around those anchors, mostly townhomes and apartments with attached single garages, and that is where our Gateway calls come from.

The district borders Stones River National Battlefield on its west side, and the streets closest to the park edge are the quietest in Gateway, which is also where a chain drive on a ceiling rail is most noticeable. A garage door that opens and closes at shift-change hours under a bedroom where someone else is still asleep is the plainest case for a jackshaft unit.

Because so much of Gateway is rental and association-managed, we are used to working with a property manager as well as the resident, and our quotes are itemized so the association or the owner can see what is being installed. For a townhome where the door itself is tired as well as the opener, a new insulated door under a bedroom cuts noise and summer heat at the same time.

How an Opener Install Runs in Gateway

  1. Tell us the ceiling height and what is above the garage

Those two facts decide between a wall mount and a belt drive before we arrive. A photo of the door and the ceiling with the form helps.

  2. Check the spring system and the outlet

A jackshaft opener turns the torsion shaft, so the springs and bearings have to be in good order first. We check them, confirm there is an outlet within reach of the mount, and give you an itemized written price, including an electrician if a new outlet is needed.

  3. Mount, set limits, test, pair remotes

The unit is mounted, the travel and force limits set, the photo eyes fitted at the floor, and the contact and photo eye reversal tests run. Remotes and any keypad are paired and the old codes cleared before we leave.
