Garage Door Opener Installation in Murfreesboro, TN

A new chain, belt, screw or wall mount opener fitted in one visit, with the door balanced first, the limits set and the federal reversal tests done before we leave.

A new belt drive opener rail mounted to the header above a sectional door

Garage door opener installation in Murfreesboro, TN runs $300 to $900 installed for most homes as of 2026, and the work takes two to six hours. That covers a chain, belt or screw drive unit, removal of the old head and rail, new photo eyes and remotes paired before we leave. A wall mount unit sits above that band.

The order matters. An opener only moves a door the springs are already carrying. If the door is heavy or drifts, the springs get priced first. If your current unit has one failed part and years left in it, an opener repair may be the cheaper call, and we will say so.

Which Opener Fits Your Door and Your Garage

Four drive types are sold for residential doors.

Chain drive

A steel chain pulls the trolley along the rail. The loudest, cheapest and most durable ceiling type. Installed, a chain drive runs $300 to $650.

Belt drive

A reinforced rubber belt replaces the chain. Quietest of the three ceiling types and mid priced at $350 to $850 installed.

The quiet option explained

Screw drive

The trolley rides a threaded steel rod. Temperature sensitive, which matters in a garage that sees a 31 F January low and an 89 F July high. $350 to $900 installed.

Wall mount jackshaft

The motor bolts to the wall beside the torsion shaft; no rail across the ceiling. $450 to $900 installed in consumer guides, about $1,500 as a pro-installed average. Needs a torsion spring door.

Brands, Horsepower Labels and What the Box Does Not Tell You

The three brands we carry

Genie is the entry tier, Chamberlain the retail mid tier, and LiftMaster the professional tier. Chamberlain and LiftMaster share the myQ phone app; Genie uses Aladdin Connect. Unit prices before labor run $150 to $650.

HP against HPc

A typical residential opener is rated 1/2 horsepower. DC motor units are labelled HPc, meaning horsepower comparable. What actually lifts the door is the spring; a balanced 16 foot door weighing 300 to 450 pounds feels like a few pounds to the motor.

Battery backup and Wi-Fi

Battery backup lets the door run through an outage and adds $50 to $150; Tennessee does not require it. Wi-Fi control adds $100 to $450 to the unit price.

What Happens on Install Day

  1. Door check with the opener disconnected

We pull the release and lift the door. A door that falls or climbs from the midpoint has a spring problem, and we quote that before an opener goes anywhere near it.

  2. Old unit down, header bracket set

The new header bracket is anchored above the door centre and the rail assembled. A 7 foot door uses the standard rail; an 8 foot door needs an extension kit at $45 to $100.

  3. Motor head hung, power confirmed

The head hangs from the ceiling on angle iron and plugs into a grounded outlet. If there is no outlet within reach, a licensed electrician adds one under a City permit.

  4. Photo eyes, limits, force, remotes

Photo eyes go no higher than 6 inches off the floor. Travel limits and force are set, then remotes, the wall console and any keypad are paired.

  5. The two federal tests

The door must reverse within 2 seconds of touching a 2x4 laid flat in its path, and again when the photo eye beam is broken while closing. Both tests come from 16 CFR Part 1211.

UL 325, the Electrical Permit and When 811 Gets a Call

Every unit we fit is listed to UL 325

IRC R309.4 says automatic garage door openers shall be listed and labeled in accordance with UL 325, and Murfreesboro adopted the 2018 IRC under Ordinance 18-O-71, effective February 1, 2019. UL 325 requires monitored entrapment protection, which is why the photo eyes on a new unit are wired so the opener knows when they are disconnected. Alongside it sits 16 CFR Part 1211, which applies to every residential operator made from January 1, 1993 onward: reversal within 2 seconds of contact, and a secondary sensor that reverses the door when tripped. The job sits well under the $3,000 line where Tennessee requires a Home Improvement licence; you can look up any contractor at verify.tn.gov.

A new outlet is a $100 permit and an electrician

Some older garages, and any garage where the opener is moving to the wall, have no outlet where the motor head hangs. A new dedicated outlet is electrical work. Inside Murfreesboro city limits, the residential electrical permit is $100 for a service up to 200 amps, inspection included, pulled under the 2017 NEC at the City Building and Codes office on West Vine Street by a Tennessee licensed electrical contractor. Outside city limits the County Building Codes office at One Public Square handles it. We coordinate the electrician and the permit so the opener goes up on one scheduled day.

Detached garage with no power: Tennessee 811 first

A new feed to a detached garage means a trench, and Tennessee law requires three working days of notice to 811 before any excavation. We build that into the schedule.

  • Door height: an 8 foot door adds an extension kit at $45 to $100.

  • Spring condition: a door that will not hold at midpoint adds a spring job at $150 to $350 a pair.

A 2004 house in the Salem area with the original chain drive dead after a storm. The door balances by hand. A Chamberlain belt drive with battery backup and myQ goes on the existing rail bracket and the existing ceiling outlet, two remotes and a keypad paired, photo eyes reset to 6 inches. Four hours, and the total lands in the middle of the $350 to $850 belt drive band.

Why Homeowners Have Us Fit the New Opener

The door is tested before the box is opened

An opener installed on a heavy door strips its gear inside a year, so we check balance first and quote spring work separately.

One itemized price, written before work starts

Unit, labor, accessories and any permit as separate lines.

Permits and the electrician handled for you

If a new outlet is needed we book the licensed electrician, the $100 City permit and the inspection.

Questions Before You Buy a New Opener

How long does it take to install a garage door opener?

Two to six hours for a straight swap. Add time if the door needs springs or an electrician is adding an outlet.

Do I need an electrician for a new opener?

Not if a grounded outlet already sits within reach of the motor head cord. If a new outlet has to be added, yes: in Murfreesboro that is a $100 residential electrical permit under the 2017 NEC, pulled by a licensed electrical contractor, with the inspection included in the fee.

What horsepower do I need for a double door?

Less than most people think. A typical residential opener is 1/2 horsepower, and DC units are labelled HPc, horsepower comparable, rather than true horsepower. The opener does not lift the door weight; the springs do. Once a door is balanced the motor only has to overcome friction.

Is a wall mount opener worth the extra money?

When ceiling space matters, yes. A jackshaft unit mounts beside the torsion shaft and leaves the ceiling clear. It costs $450 to $900 installed in consumer guides and about $1,500 as a dealer average, and it needs a torsion spring door.

Work That Pairs With a New Opener

Fixing the unit you have is the cheaper route when a single part failed on an opener under 10 years old.

Pairing remotes, keypads and car buttons is part of install day, and a standalone visit when a remote stops working later.

A yearly check of balance, rollers and limits keeps the new motor from doing work the springs should.

Door Stuck? Tell Us What It Is Doing

A door that will not lift, hangs crooked, or stops a few inches off the floor is usually one failed part. Call during posted hours or send the symptoms and we will come out, name the part, and put an itemized price in front of you before we touch it.
